As someone who is just starting theological training (though I've down a huge amount of reading over the years) this book is both readable and studious. Although it's titled as an 'introduction', the author does not just skim the surface but provides a solid basis for his analysis of each book. It's also interesting to read a New Testament Introduction from someone from a different church tradition (R.E. Brown is a Catholic).

I'd highly recommend this book to anyone starting out studying the NT.

I found myself in general agreement with Will Deming when I read this book. His categories, while very helpful and important for NT study were two restrictive. He created too many unnecessary false dichotomies between purity and ethics. I kept finding myself saying, "YES, but..." throughout the book.

Thanks for pointing that out. I knew that Childs had been critical of Hays and I had completely overlooked his endorsement on the front cover. I shall add this to the blog entry.

Well, that's what is says on the front cover. Childs has been very critical of Hays in the past. I wonder if things have changed in this volume.

I recognise that this question will be a little random considering the post it is attached to so apologies, but I have two questions:

1. Are you aware is Mowinckel's Le Decalogue has been translated into English?

2. Are you aware if Humbert's “La relation de Genese I et du Psaum 104 avec la liturgie du Nouvel - An Israelite” has been translated into English?
